2022-07-01 Forestry training “Thinning”

We've arrived at Otaniyama, the Field Museum (FM), an experimental forest run by TUAT in Gunma Prefecture!
These students are from the Department of Department of Ecoregion Science, Faculty of Faculty of Agriculture.
We are currently in the midst of an intensive "silviculture training" course, where we are gaining a scientific perspective on forest ecosystems through hands-on experience in forest management and nursery work!
Today's practical training involved thinning a cedar forest that has grown and become crowded.
How do you thin trees?
I also learned about Hakken and Koken from Professor Toda Hiroto.
First, select the trees to be thinned!
Wang conducts a ``tree-by-tree survey'' measuring the height and diameter of the cedar trees in the area to be thinned (the diameter of the trunk at breast height of approximately 1.2 meters).
The first photo shows Wan measuring the height of the tree.

Then, as shown in the second photo, Wan looks at the growth of each tree and the shape of its trunk, classifies them by ``tree type,'' and selects the trees to be thinned.
Trees that are to be thinned are trees that have slow growth and are hidden under other trees, or trees that have severely bent or damaged trunks.

Once you have selected the tree, it's time to cut it down!
For felling, I use an ax and a saw.

First, as shown in the third photo, make a wedge-shaped socket in the direction you want the ax to hit.
The 4th and 5th photos show the ``exit'' being inserted slightly above the socket using a saw from the opposite side of the socket.

When you cut it like this, the socket becomes like a hinge and slowly falls over, as shown in the 6th photo.
Well, the intensive training will be 3 nights and 4 days!
One that continues!
Next week, Wang will be introducing the "planting" process.
looking forward to!
