2022-12-23 Regional Ecosystem Studies Training II “Satoyama Management Fieldwork”

Today I would like to introduce the class "Regional Ecosystem Studies Practical Training II" for first-year students in Department of Ecoregion Science Faculty of Agriculture.
In this class, in addition to the compulsory farm training, all students will choose to take two training routes from among several in the fields of ecology, forestry, agro-environmental engineering, and coexistence.
This time I took part in "Satoyama Management Fieldwork," one of the forest route training sessions.
I went on an outdoor training trip with Professor Toda Hiroto and his students!
Approximately 100 minutes by train or bus from Fuchu Campus.
One arrived at Tokyo Metropolitan Noyamakita/Rokudoyama Park where we will be doing practical training!

Wang immediately went to the meeting point in front of the Satoyama private house and listened to the park manager and volunteers explain the history and origins of this park.
The first and second photos are from the explanation.
The explanation using picture-story shows was very easy to understand!

Afterwards, Wang and the students cut bamboo in the Quercus oak and Japanese red pine forests.
First, as shown in the third photo, after listening to the precautions from the volunteers, the dog carefully cut down the bamboo using a sickle, as shown in the fourth photo.
I didn't get used to it at first, but as I used it, I gradually became able to use it well!

In this oak forest, old trees are cut down, allowing new shoots to sprout from the stumps (sprouting), and by nurturing these sprouts, the forest is rejuvenated through a process called "sprout regeneration."
The red pine forest is undergoing "natural regeneration."
Natural regeneration is a method in which trees are established after felling without any replanting, by using seedlings that grow naturally or fallen seeds.
We aim to regenerate the forest using the power of nature.
One of the great attractions of this training is that you can learn about Satoyama management while actually observing the condition of the trees.
Hakken and Koken also worked alongside the students and observed the vegetation in the forest.

As shown in the 5th photo, everyone collected the cut bamboo, put it on a plastic sheet, and took it to the collection site.
On the day, many students participated, so we were able to reap a lot.

The sixth photo shows the used sickle being sharpened with a whetstone.
One also learned how to take care of the sickle.
In order to use frequently used tools for longer and more comfortably, it is important to learn how to properly care for them.

Noyamakita/Rokudoyama Park is not only surrounded by rich nature, but also has Satoyama private houses, which are newly built and restored private houses from the Edo period that existed around the Sayama Hills.
The seventh photo is the end of the hearth.
What a warm and comfortable space!

The 8th photo is firewood piled up next to a private house.
One used for a hearth or wood stove.
Firewood is a circular resource obtained from trees in the countryside.

In the afternoon, Wang took a walk in the large park (260 ha, the largest of the metropolitan parks!) and learned about the management status of the park.
At the park information center, we also met the Tokyo salamander in the 9th photo!
In this practical training, we not only learned how to renew and manage shiitake logs, firewood forests, and forests used for collecting fallen leaves for compost, but also learned about the future use of forests in "satoyama" areas near cities. I also had an opportunity to think about management.
The 10th photo is a commemorative photo taken with the students who participated in this practical training.
Thank you everyone for your hard work!
