2022-11-02 Regional Ecosystem Studies Practice I “Sweet Potato Harvesting”

It's getting colder, and it's the perfect season for delicious, steamy roasted sweet potatoes.
By the way, I wondered what had happened to the potatoes that the first-year students in the Department of Department of Ecoregion Science of Faculty of Agriculture had planted in June in their "Regional Ecosystem Studies Practical Training I" class, so I went to check on them...
We are currently doing a potato digging practice!

The first photo is a lecture on how to use a sickle by a technical staff member.
Before digging the potatoes, first, as shown in the second photo, cut the voluminous vines of the potatoes with a sickle.
The vines of sweet potatoes are strong, so there are some tricks to cutting them properly.

The 3rd to 6th photos are the harvest of Naruto Kintoki.

One digs up the sweet potatoes he planted in June and weighs them to find out how much he has harvested.

The big sweet potato in the 7th photo is Beniasma.
The three varieties we harvested were ``Narutokintoki,'' ``Beniazuma,'' and ``Beniharuka,'' shown in the 8th photo.

All three types of sweet potatoes look very delicious, but each type has different characteristics.
Naruto Kintoki is a sweet potato that is recommended for both cooking and roasting.

Beniasuma is a variety with large sweet potatoes that can be harvested in large quantities.
When children try digging for potatoes, they often use Beniazuma, which can harvest large potatoes.

Beniharuka is sticky and perfect for roasted sweet potatoes!
This is a popular variety recently.

The potatoes harvested by the students will be used at the school festival taking place from November 11th to 13th, in local school lunches, and will also be shipped to Yume Ichiba (Dream’s Market) (@nokoyumeichiba)!

Hakken: “I’m going to use this sweet potato to make baked sweet potatoes today!”
Kouken: ``One of the technical staff told me that the sweetness of sweet potatoes will be better if you don't eat them immediately after harvesting and leave them for about a week. Just be patient!''
