2023-05-26 Field experiment training I “Paddy rice sowing”

Visiting the first-year class "Field Experiment Training I" in the Department of Biological Production!
Today's practical training is "rice sowing" at FM Honmachi.
Professor Motobayashi Takashi and technical staff member Matsukawa Koji teach Wang about cultivation methods, soil characteristics, and how to use tools while he prepares rice seedlings.

The first photo shows the soil being prepared.
Mixing the soil efficiently with a large shovel is harder than it looks.

The second and third photos show the process of putting soil into the seedling trays.
The blue tool the student is holding is a seedbed ruler.
By using a seedbed ruler to spread the soil evenly in the seedling trays, the seeds will be at the same depth and the seedlings will be of the same height.

The fourth and fifth photos show a seeder.
Sow the seeds in the prepared seedling trays, cover with soil and it's done!
Waiting for the seeds to sprout in the greenhouse in the sixth photo!

The seedling in the eighth photo is about five days old after being planted.
It depends on the weather, but apparently one leaf will appear about every week.

Once the seedlings grow, there will be a rice planting session!
In Japan, rice planting is mainly done using a rice transplanter, but in this practical training, you will plant the rice by hand in order to get a feel for the condition of the soil in the rice paddy and the feel of the rice after planting.

The grown rice will be sold at Yume Ichiba (Dream’s Market) (@nokoyumeichiba) in the autumn.
I'm looking forward to eating the delicious new rice!
