2022-07-22 Regional Ecosystem Studies Practice I “Sweet Potato Planting Practice”

Wang visits the "Regional Ecosystem Studies Practical Training I" class for first-year students in the Department of Department of Ecoregion Science of Faculty of Agriculture.
Today we have a sweet potato planting practice led by Assistant Professor Nakajima Norikazu.
It will be held in the fields of the Fuchu campus!

The seedlings prepared by the technical staff were of three varieties: ``Beniazuma,'' ``Narutokintoki,'' and ``Beniharuka.''
Beniharuka is easy to grow because it is resistant to a pest called the sweet potato nematode.

Sweet potatoes have roots that grow from the nodes of the leaves of the seedlings, and the tuberous roots that store nutrients there are what turn into sweet potatoes.
When planting, the key is to bury at least 3 nodes in the soil.
It's not good if it's too deep or too shallow, so it's quite difficult.

This year, students lined up in order of student ID number and planted seedlings in their respective areas.
After harvesting in the fall, they plan to conduct a yield survey to check the weight and number of potatoes.

The ridges are covered with black mulch sheets to avoid weeds, increase soil temperature, and protect from heavy rain.
The mulch sheet used here is biodegradable.
It will decompose in about 3 months.

In the 6th photo, the student is using a tool to make holes in the multi-sheet.
If you roll the tire from one end of a long ridge to the other, holes will appear at evenly spaced intervals.

The potatoes grown by the students will be used at the school festival in November and in local school lunches, and are also scheduled to be shipped to Yume Ichiba (Dream’s Market) (@nokoyumeichiba).
I hope we get lots of sweet, fluffy sweet potatoes.

Next week, we'll be introducing the research we're doing in this sweet potato field!
